Greg -
This is a interesting piece of work. It shows you understand how editing has developed from one stage to another and why. You understand the basic processes in relation to the technology available at various points in time. Your descriptions of the editing techniques are really to a Merit level. Unfortunately, Merit level work requires you to present work that is written well with very few errors in spelling and grammar. Your written work is not to a high enough standard to warrant achieving a Merit, particularly as your writing does not make it clear what I think it is you want to say.
I would suggest you take the time to proofread your work before submitting it in future. Read it aloud - it often reads very different and it makes it more obvious what needs correcting and clarifying. If writing is not your strong point, type your work in Word in the first instance so that you can get support from the software for corrections in spelling, etc. If you really struggle, I strongly urge you to seek ALS support. This is essential for all your future assignments and any work you might want to do in the future. 15.1P

Over time the princibals of editing has changed and developed with technology there is now programs such as final cut pro,at first editing was as simple as cutting a piece of film and joining it back again. Now there's all sorts of ways to illustrate a song such as mixing graphics in with original footage using editing software. There is now ability to have better transitions between shots as well. When music videos was in its early stages the shot types were simple and mainly mid/long shots because this was before people realized using close-ups can tell a story or have vital information in a subtle way,for example like 1:22 into the music video kickstart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCmO-C9D3zE) it shows a tattoo on someones neck later showing that tattoo is connected to a gang and allows you to work out who's on who's side. also now using different angles such as low-angle looking up at someone gives them power and this can be used simple way but effectively to give you a incite and feel of the character on screen. There is a unwritten rule that you don't go past 180o for the reason that the viewer finds it easier to follow a story that is set out in a clear way,in many shows there is a wall that you don't get to see this is also for the reason of having a big film crew set up across the line and it helps to frame shots. Creating pace in a video is done by cutting quicker transitions between shots, this speeds up the atmosphere and when accompanied by a dramatic sound bed engages the viewer massively. A motivated shot is when you know whats comeing, for example if someone was to look shockingly towards a door the audience would have a good idea what the next shot is,it will most likely show the door or whats behind it. Jump cuting is a quick transition between any seleted shots. Clearly thorght out transitions can be used for different effects for example a slow fade to black can indercait the ending of the song or fadeing to black and white can indercait the past. Cross fades can show the passing of time these are all the small things that are esential to make a video work and be sucessful. A montarge is generaly used with photograths but can be used in film,a monaerge is when there is various quickly selected shots. This can be used efectivly in a flshback of someones life. Point ov view shot is where your seeing what the charater is seeing threw thire eyes and is used alot to show panic or disstress in films. An example of a Cut away is when someone is talking or in this scenario singing and it will cut/fade to a shot of a beach while they sing about it.

Lecturer feedback - RESUBMISSION
15.1 INCOMPLETE
I am disappointed to see that you have still not completed Task One (part two) of your assignment brief. If you do not complete this, you cannot receive a grade for this Unit. As editing is central to what you want to do professionally, I think it is in your interest to not only complete this, but to do a thorough and detailed job!

NEW re-done post --The perpose of a music video
Bands, musicians and music artiest alike use music videos for various reasons. One being a visual aid to illustrate what is being said, the video is used to anchor the idea of what the musician is trying to portray. The other being another medium that they can put there creativeness into giving them a further outlet to distribute there music on the market allowing them to gather a bigger fan base by using there unique selling point for the track. The unique selling point would be described as a strength within the project that you can then use and exploit to market the project.
Michael jackson thriller had ground breaking danceing as a unique selling point for his video, he also was one of the few black musician's to have a music video out on MTV at the current time so this furtherd him greatly.

Analisis of music video 3 - Michael Jackson - Thriller
Michael Jackson - Thriller changed how music videos are looked at the ground breaking 14minute video began raking in views from when it was released on MTV. the narrative of the video is that the main character michael turns into a zombie and the aim of the producer was to scare the audience in a seance because its like a short film. The unique selling point of this video is the dramatic costume and well learnt dance routines which made the audience watch regardless of if they liked the song or not .
Many tried to copy this style of pop video after for its great choreography which made people stop to watch it became universal for pop videos to have dance. From start to end the video is set in dark gloomy places with low light creating a certian mood which works perfectly along with the dramatic costume and make-up ,you'll often get close-ups just to show the make-up and costume in this. There are many varied shots used for thriller due to the dancing and codes and conventions of a short film like the first half of the video.

Analisis of music video 2 - My version of State of mind -Filmed and edited by me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s_M3sdMNgQ&feature=related
Brum State of Mind by Entity and Shanice produced by Greg Martin
The song is a remake of the original so when i dicieded to make a remake of the video i analised jay-z's version in great detail witch has worked well with over 600 plays in two days the video has been a hit.
The narrative again here is basically showing and representing Birmingham,so with no establishing shot the montage sets the scene so you instantly know its Birmingham iv used famous land marks in the pictures so that it carnt be interpreted wrong. It starts off with a fast pace because of the montage but slightly slows down as it it not used throughout,The image i wanted people to have was that Birmingham classy so the location was choose for a reason, nice marble buildings fountings and hotel rooms, all of which i had to get filming permission for. Again this is a juxtaposition because personally i dont see Birmingham as classy at all but this is what i was trying to market. Thew the verse's there is mainly close ups and mid shots and this is again trying the remake the style of the original and the transitions are clean and cut quick varied from the chorus where there is a big uses of fade threws and dissolves with tracking shots, the angle of the camera in certan shot is also trying to give the artist power so show there in a sence on top of there city.
